Work methodology for geological and geotechnical assessment of school sites as finalized with Project Staff on April 20, 2007, included key steps as follow:
Prepare a revised "Fault Line Map" for the earthquake affected area, using (a) available 1:50,000 scale geological maps published by Geological Survey of Pakistan, (b) field information collected by NESPAK during the seismic hazard microzonation of Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Balakot and Bagh and or (c) other available small scale regional maps.
Convince the concern education department to provide coordinated of the proposed school sites for assessment of sites-suitability before getting approval of PC-1.
Categorized the proposed sites as follow using the revised “Fault Line Map”.
Category-A: Located at minimum distance of 1.00 km from a major fault line and or 0.500 km from a minor fault line. No obvious local hazard identifiable on the satellite image or topographic map. Site is recommended for further processing; after confirmation of its clearance with respect local hazard by Project Field Staff.
Category-B: Located at minimum distance of 1.00 km from major fault line and or 0.500 km from minor fault line, but potential of local hazard exists on satellite image or topographic map. Intimate the concerned education department about the hazard with request to hold preparation of PC-1 and look for an alternative location (suggesting probable direction and extent for shifting). The alternative location shall be visited by the Project Field Staff.
Category-C: Located with a distance between 1.00 and 0.250 km from a minor fault line or 0.500 and 0.150 km from minor fault line. The site shall be assessed by a geologist for clearance with respect to geological and geotechnical hazard. In case the site is declared hazardous, the same shall be intimated to the concerned education department with request to hold preparation of PC-1 and look for an alternative location (suggesting probable direction and extent for shifting). The alternative location shall be visited by the Project Field Staff for clearance.
Category-D: Located within a distance of 0.250 km from major fault line or o.150 km from minor fault line. Intimated the concerned education department about the hazard with request to hold preparation of PC-1 look for an alternative location (suggesting probable direction and extent for shifting). The alternative location shall be categorized again and visited by the Project Field Staff for clearance.
Carry out field verification and assessment as per the guidelines given for each category.
