The ill-fated day of October 08, 2005 brought catastrophic loss in 9 Districts of AJK & Khyber Phukhtoonkhwa in particular. The earthquake resulted in huge loss of life and injury, accompanied by extreme damage to buildings and infrastructure. The day demanded immediate attention to the injured, but unfortunately health units were also badly hit.
Immediately, field/mobile health care units were established with both local and international support. Meanwhile extent and nature of damages to these health units were assessed by various Departments/Agencies including NESPAK.
ERRA later assigned NESPAK to prepare standard architectural guidelines identifying the requirements of various levels of health units including Mother & Child Health Centres (MCH), Basic Health Units (BHU), Tehsil Headquarter Hospital (THQ) and District Headquarter Hospital (DHQ).
Preparation of Sample Structural Design for Basic Health Unit

A number of basic health units are to be constructed under reconstruction program by GoP. In order to help these agencies to develop adequate structural designs for their proposed units a sample structural design was prepared by NESPAK. This design highlighted principles of earthquake resistance and application of commonly used building codes (UBC and ACS) to produce earthquake resistance structures. These drawings highlighted the importance of concrete confinement by closely spaced ties and clarified numerous steel detailing issues.
