On October 8, 2005, a high intensity
earthquake (magnitude 7.6 on Richter scale) struck the Northern parts of KPK,
AJ&K and the surroundings including the capital city of Islamabad. The
tremor was felt over large distances from epicenter which included Lahore and
New Delhi in India. The epicenter was located near Muzaffarabad, approximately
95Km North East of Islamabad. This incident has been graded as the 9th
greatest earthquake reported since 1812. The earthquake was shallow rooted,
caused a serious loss to human lives and property. This tremor induced
landslides, dilapidation of private and public buildings, destruction of public
sector infrastructure comprising road network, retaining walls, water supply
and irrigation works, institutional buildings, electric and communication
networks.
To support implementation of Seismic Safe Structures
in inaccessible remote hilly areas, DM&RD also ventured in introducing
Alternative Fast Track Technologies like Structural Concrete Insulated Panel
(SCIP) Construction and Pre-Engineered Light Gauge Cold Formed Galvanized Steel
Structures. Also guide lines for construction of seismic resistant houses using
locally available construction materials were developed to facilitate common
people residing in Earthquake prone areas.
In addition to all
these services, DM&RD is not left behind in providing state of the art
Information Technology Services. DM&RD takes pride in developing the largest
monitoring platform in Pakistan for Construction management activities. For the
ERRA works, Business Process Management software has been developed by in house
professionals. The system encores information of all the reconstruction and
rehabilitation works spread over area of about 30,000 square KM and comprises
of about 5000 construction sites.
