Seismic Hazard Microzonation for Rural Management at Selected Villages in Gilgit-Baltistan & Chitral - FOCUS

INTRODUCTION
Gilgit-Baltistan  & Chitral regions lies in a tecthnicaliy active and complex domain of  Pakistan. According to the seismoiogical maps prepared by Geological Survey of  Pakistan (GSP), these areas are located in close proximity to active tectonic  features capable of generating hazardous earthquakes. As per Building Code of  Pakistan - Seismic Provisions 2007, these regions lie in relatively High  Seismic Zones i.e. Zone-3 and Zone-4 with a recommended PGA value of greater  than 0.32g. Heavy damage to these areas is anticipated during a future seismic  event that could adversely affect the life and economy of the country. However,  the local Governments, rural communities and decision makers are not fully  aware of earthquake risks involved to these areas. In order to build the  capacity of rural municipal authorities and resilience of rural communities,  appropriate information and data shall be produced and reflected by self  explanatory user friendly maps and drawings for Developing Managers and other  Government Line Departments to ensure sustainable social and economic  development.
This study is divided in  two (02) phases. The Scope of Work / Work Plan given below is of Phase -1.  Phase - II will be conducted as a separate project after the completion of  Phase - I. Main activities of Phase - II include Geophysical Survey,  reconfirmation of initially identified Fault Rupture Zones, Flood Hazard  Analysis taking into account of hydrological and hydro- geological analysis  like demarcation of catchment area of primary and secondary drainage channels,  terrain processing, terrain morphological analysis, watershed processing, DEM  reconditioning, Weighted Flow Accumulation, Drainage Area Characterization,  Development of Hydrological Network, and detailed Geotechnical Investigations  etc.

SCOPE OF WORK/SERVICES
This study will  include the Seismic Hazard Microzonation (SHM) of selected villages (Immit  & Shogor) in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral areas respectively for the  development of Seismic Hazard Microzonation Maps using Remote Sensing (RS) and  Geographical Information System (GIS) Techniques indicating different levels of  Seismic Hazard Microzones and preparation of a comprehensive report inclusive  of recommendations and guidelines for Developing Managers and landuse planners.  The process of Seismic Hazard Microzonation will be utilized as an opportunity  to raise awareness of the Government Line Departments and rural communities, to  substantiate earthquake safer urban landuse planning and development.
The scope of work involves  the geologic, geotechnical and seismic evaluation of rocks and soils of these  areas by utilizing the available secondary data / information for the  determination of seismic design parameters for earthquake resistant construction.  It also involves the analysis of instrumental seismic data for the provision of  realistic PGA values. However to ascertain the reliability of secondary data,  necessary field verification studies shall be conducted as required. Field  studies shall also be focused to collect necessary raw data required for  geologic mapping and delineation of fault rupture zones. The scope of work also  includes the recommendations and guidelines for existing construction in  perspective with Building Code of Pakistan - Seismic Provisions 2007 and  findings of the SHM studies of these villages.
